VA Airborne Hazards and Burn Pits Center of Excellence
Michael J. Falvo, PhD, is the Co-Director of the VA's Airborne Hazards and Burn Pits Center of Excellence (AHBPCE) and an Associate Professor at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School in the Departments of Pharmacology, Physiology & Neuroscience as well as Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation. He completed his training in exercise science and kinesiology from The College of New Jersey (BS), University of Memphis (MS), and Washington University in Saint Louis (PhD). From 2010-2012, he completed a VA Advanced Fellowship Program in post-deployment health at the VA's War Related Illness and Injury Study Center.
Dr. Falvo is the Principal Investigator of the Cardiorespiratory Physiology Laboratory and leads a program of research that investigates mechanisms of dyspnea and exercise intolerance in the context of environmental and occupational exposures. His lab has been supported by VA's Office of Research & Development, Department of Defense's Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program, and foundation awards. Dr. Falvo has published more than 100 peer-reviewed articles.
Clinically, Dr. Falvo is a registered clinical exercise physiologist and pulmonary function technologist. His laboratory provides advanced cardiopulmonary services for Veterans referred to the Center or seen through the AHBPCE's Post-Deployment Cardiopulmonary Evaluation Network.
