Lee S. Newman, MD, MA is Distinguished University Professor at the University of Colorado, working in the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health and Department of Epidemiology at the Colorado School of Public Health, and in the Department of Medicine in the School of Medicine. Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Pulmonary Medicine, Dr. Newman’s career has focused on promoting the health, safety and well-being of workers. He is founding director of two Centers funded by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) -- the Center for Health, Work & Environment (one of ten national Centers of Excellence in Total Worker Health) and the Mountain & Plains Education and Research Center. A longstanding ACOEM Fellow, Dr. Newman is internationally recognized as a leading public health educator and for his scientific and practical contributions to the fields of occupational safety and health, Total Worker Health, biomarker development, occupational disease prevention and treatment, health informatics, medical surveillance, and intervention science. He is co-founder and former CEO of Axion Health, a health information technology company.
He has authored more than 260 peer-reviewed scientific papers as well as over 130 books, chapters, and monographs. Dr. Newman teaches in the Colorado School of Public Health where he is a faculty member in the Occupational and Environmental Medicine Residency Program and the online Certificate in Total Worker Health. His educational background includes degrees from Amherst College (BA), Cornell University (MA in Social Psychology), Vanderbilt University (MD), Emory University (Internal Medicine), and University of Colorado (Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine).
