UCSF
Dr. Hatfield is an Internal Medicine trained physician with deep practice experience with mining populations in Sub-Saharan Africa. As part of a multi-disciplinary team, he helped design and implement a silicosis screening program in the Eastern Province of Rwanda that was instrumental to demonstrating the high rates of tuberculosis and silicosis among this cohort. He continues to remain involved in this work, pushing for improved working conditions and clinical programs for these patients. His recent work has included collaboration with other groups in sub-Saharan Africa to improve detection of tuberculosis and silicosis in mining populations, using computer aided detection and other novel tools to improve the epidemiology and awareness of these under-diagnosed diseases in vulnerable working populations. Otherwise, he practices hospital medicine at the Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital in San Francisco, California and is Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine at the University of California at San Francisco, where he is involved with clinical education of medical student and resident physicians
