Dr. Margaret Sietsema is an expert in respiratory protection. Having completed her PhD in Industrial Hygiene she worked for the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) as a researcher in the National Personal Protective Technology Laboratory (NPPTL) for a year before taking a faculty position at the University of Illinois Chicago in the School of Public Health. She spent 10 years as a faculty member at UIC and served as the director for the Industrial Hygiene Program from 2021-2025 within the NIOSH funded Education and Research Center (ERC). Since May of 2025 Dr. Sietsema works as a regulatory expert at 3M helping to guide the development of global respirator standards.
She has won several awards for her research including an Honorable Mention for the NIOSH Bullard-Sherman Award for Research to Practice in 2024, and was the NIOSH Nominee for the CDC Charles C. Shepard Award for Outstanding Scientific Paper in 2020. She has twice received the John M. White Best paper award from the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA).
