Stella E. Hines, MD, MSPH is a Professor in the Division of Occupational and Environmental Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, affiliated with the Baltimore VA Medical Center and a practicing pulmonologist at the University of Maryland Medical Center. Board-certified in Occupational Medicine, Pulmonary Disease, and Internal Medicine, Dr. Hines has evaluated patients with work-related and environmental lung conditions since 2006. From 2023 to 2025, she led national investigations into respiratory hazards as Chief of the Field Studies Branch at CDC’s NIOSH. Her research has shaped best practices in respiratory protection for healthcare workers and advanced understanding of deployment-related lung disease in Veterans. A Fellow of the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine and recipient of the ATS Section on Terrorism and Inhalational Disasters Mid-Career Achievement Award, Dr. Hines is also a dedicated educator and mentor whose work reflects a deep commitment to protecting worker health through clinical care, research, and education.
