This comprehensive course is designed for Occupational Healthcare providers seeking to enhance their understanding and skills in performing and interpreting spirometry, a vital tool for assessing lung function. Participants will learn the essential principles of pulmonary physiology, the technical aspects of spirometry, and the clinical significance of test results in medical surveillance programs for respiratory hazards. Through a combination of lectures and case studies, participants will gain practical experience in administering spirometry tests, ensuring proper technique, and troubleshooting common issues. Emphasis will be placed on patient preparation, equipment calibration, and the interpretation of spirometry data, including understanding normal values and recognizing obstructive and restrictive patterns. A short review of recent developments in occupational asthma will be covered. By the end of the course, healthcare providers will be equipped to confidently incorporate spirometry into their clinical practice in accordance with ATS/ERS and ACOEM recommendations.
Learning Objectives:
Describe proper spirometry technique including calibration check procedures, pre-test patient preparation and patient coaching.
Interpret spirometry results and differentiate between normal and abnormal findings.
Apply spirometry data in the context of clinical decision-making for medical clearance and surveillance.
Discuss new findings reported for several known respiratory sensitizing agents
