Session Description: Decoding Data Centers: Occupational Health in Planet-Scale Computing. Explore the human elements: noise, ergonomics, heat, cooling system fluids, and psychological demands. The AOHC 2026 theme is Healthy workers. Healthy world: This proposed session directly supports the theme "Healthy workers Healthy world” with the parallel of a planet-sized computer (i.e. the data centers) and building an occupational health program that fits a dynamic global workforce. By addressing the occupational health challenges in data centers, in light of the sheer scale, we aim to share classic, unique, and innovative approaches in creating a healthier and safer working environment. This contributes to a more sustainable and responsible technological landscape, aligning with the interconnectedness of worker health and global progress in artificial (AI) intelligence and machine learning (ML).

Learning Objectives:

  • Upon completion, participants will be able to understand key occupational health hazards (noise, ergonomics, heat, cooling system fluids, psychological) specific to planet-scale data center environments and their impact on worker well-being across diverse roles.
  • Upon completion, participants will be able to understand approaches to evaluate and compare various risk mitigation strategies and best practices applicable to data centers, including engineering controls, administrative procedures, and individual interventions.
  • Upon completion, participants will be able to understand how to develop actionable steps to advocate for and implement effective occupational health programs within their own organizations or spheres of influence, including strategies for leadership engagement and stakeholder management.
