Session Description: Cannabis has been legalized in Canada and in many U.S. states, but legalization has not eliminated the risks, f anything, it has amplified them. With new high-potency products, expanded methods of use, and shifting social norms, cannabis remains a significant workplace safety challenge. Rates of use have increased since legalization, and normalization of cannabis among employees and the public continues to create a culture where risk is underestimated. This session will examine how legalization has changed patterns of use and the types of cannabis products available, the implications for impairment and safety, and the challenges employers face in maintaining safe workplaces. Practical strategies will be discussed, including how education, policy, and drug testing - particularly the evolving role of oral fluid testing and functional impairment testing - can help organizations address the normalization of cannabis use and reduce risk. Participants will leave with an updated understanding of cannabis in the post-legalization era, why it remains a workplace concern, and what steps organizations can take to protect employees and the public.
Educational Gaps: Occupational physicians are challenged managing cannabis in legalized states and countries, with the knowledge of risks of cannabis in the workplace. Gaps include understanding evolving cannabis use patterns/products, the nature and duration of impairment based on this, and appropriate testing options. This session addresses how to align testing with state laws, regulations, and workplace policy.
