113 - Alcohol Use Disorder in the Workplace: Screening, Support, and Safe Return-to-Work

Session Description: Nearly 14% of adults meet criteria for alcohol use disorder (AUD) in a given year, and about 78% of them are employed. Alcohol misuse among workers contributes to more workplace accidents, injuries, and lost productivity. Occupational health clinicians are uniquely positioned to recognize and address this issue within the workforce. In this session, we will examine the scope of AUD in working populations and its impact on workplace safety and productivity. We will highlight organizational survey considerations, outline best practices in screening and brief interventions, and review the essence of harm reduction approaches. Participants will gain practical strategies for supporting employees while balancing workplace safety and recovery needs, including return-to-work considerations for safety-sensitive roles.

Educational Gaps: Occupational health providers receive little guidance on managing alcohol use disorder at work, often focusing on drug testing or discipline rather than early intervention. This session addresses that gap by demonstrating practical, evidence-based approaches for AUD screening, intervention, and follow-up in the workplace.
